This innovative project involves well-established institutions such as the University of Geneva (UNIGE), the École Polytechnique (Paris), the Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL), the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Western Switzerland (hes-so) and Germany’s TRUMPF scientific lasers. The consortium’s aim is to control natural disasters such as lightning strikes and to protect human life and infrastructure.

What is a Laser Lightning Rod (LLR)?
This technology, unlike traditional lightning rods, aims to direct lightning to a targeted point instead of catching it. The laser beam ionizes free electrons in the air, creating a plasma channel. This plasma channel serves as the path for the lightning to follow, and the lightning is deflected in a direction controlled by the device.
Tests at Säntis Summit
The effectiveness of the LLR was proven in tests carried out at the Säntis summit in Switzerland, during which it was observed that the rod was able to deflect lightning tens of metres even in bad weather conditions.

Feasibility and Future Plans
Researchers are hopeful about the practical applicability of LLR. It is thought that LLR could provide more effective protection over large areas where traditional lightning rods provide limited protection.
